You check your GBP insights. 500 views this week. 50 direction requests. 2 phone calls. Something is wrong. People are seeing your profile, but they're not taking the action you want. Your profile is optimized for visibility, not conversion.

The gap between views and actions is a design problem

Google gives you tools to drive specific actions. Most business owners ignore them. A profile with a 'Call Now' button gets more calls than one without. A profile with a 'Book Online' button gets more bookings. This sounds obvious. Most businesses still don't enable these features.

CTA button optimization — which one to pick

GBP lets you choose a primary CTA button: Call, Book Online, Order Online, or Get Directions. Pick the one that matches your primary conversion goal. A restaurant should pick Order Online or Book a Table. A clinic should pick Book Online. A plumber should pick Call Now. One button, one goal. Multiple options confuse the customer and dilute the action signal.

Appointment link setup increases bookings by 30%

If you use a booking system — Calendly, Cal.com, Booksy, Cliniko — connect it to your GBP. The 'Book Online' button appears directly in your knowledge panel. I've seen clinics go from 5 bookings per week to 15+ just by enabling the booking link. The link itself takes 10 minutes to set up.

Phone tracking gives you data on what's working

Use a Google Forwarding Number in your GBP. It replaces your real number with a tracked number. You can see exactly how many calls came from your GBP vs your website vs other sources. Without this, you're guessing which channels drive calls. Insight data shows 'phone calls' as a total. A forwarding number shows you the breakdown.

Call history data in Insights — what to look for

Go to your GBP Insights > Calls. Look at the 'total calls' number for the last 28 days. If it's below 10, your CTA setup is failing. Check if your phone number is correct, your button is active, and your business hours are accurate. People won't call a business that looks closed.

The button placement does not matter. Google controls where buttons appear. What matters is whether the button exists at all. Most businesses don't even enable the button. That's the first fix.
