GBP Categories & Attributes — The Most Important Setting You Control
Your primary category is the single most important ranking signal on your GBP. Here's how to pick the right one.
Google Business Profile
Overview

Your primary category tells Google what type of business you are. If you get it wrong, nothing else matters. Google uses your primary category to decide which search queries your profile should appear for. A restaurant using 'Food & Beverage' instead of 'Italian Restaurant' misses every search for Italian food.
How to pick the right primary category
Search the GBP category list for the most specific option available. Not 'Doctor' — 'Dentist' or 'Dermatologist' or 'Pediatrician.' Not 'Automotive' — 'Auto Repair Shop' or 'Car Wash' or 'Tire Dealer.' Google's category list has over 4,000 options. Your goal is to find the exact match, not the closest approximation.
Secondary categories work as keywords
You get up to 10 secondary categories. Each one is a separate search query you can rank for. A dental clinic with 'Dentist' as primary can add 'Cosmetic Dentist,' 'Emergency Dental Service,' 'Teeth Whitening Service,' and 'Dental Implants Provider' as secondary. Each secondary category opens a new set of searches your profile can appear in. Most businesses use 2-3 secondary categories. The top performers use 8-10.
Healthcare attributes matter specifically
If you run a clinic, attributes like 'Accepting New Patients,' 'Telehealth Appointments,' and 'Insurance Accepted' are critical. Patients filter by these when searching. Without the 'Accepting New Patients' attribute enabled, you're invisible to new patients actively looking for a provider. Check your attributes quarterly — Google adds new ones regularly.
Service business attributes filter searches
For service businesses: 'Free Parking,' 'Free Wi-Fi,' 'Wheelchair Accessible,' 'Outdoor Seating,' 'Open Late.' Each attribute you enable is a search filter. If a customer filters for 'Free Parking' and your profile doesn't have it enabled, you won't appear. Even if you have free parking — you just didn't check the box.
Common mistakes with categories and attributes
Mistake one: using the same category as every other business in your area. If your competitors all use 'Restaurant' and you use 'Egyptian Restaurant,' you capture a more specific audience. Mistake two: ignoring attributes entirely. Most profiles have 3-5 attributes enabled. I recommend enabling every relevant attribute — but only if it's true. Lying about attributes is a guideline violation.
Google uses your primary category as the strongest relevance signal. Secondary categories and attributes add layers of specificity. Together, they tell Google exactly when to show your business. Get these right before spending time on anything else.
