Do GBP Posts Help Rankings? What I've Seen in 12 Months of Data
Posts won't directly rank you higher. But they do three things that matter. Here's what works and what doesn't.
Google Business Profile
Overview

I've tracked GBP posts across 12 clients over 12 months. The honest answer: posts do not directly improve your ranking. Google has never confirmed posts as a ranking signal. But they do three things that indirectly move the needle.
1. Freshness signals keep your profile active
Google prioritizes active profiles over abandoned ones. A profile with a post from this week looks active. A profile with no posts in 6 months looks closed. Freshness is not a direct ranking factor, but it influences Google's confidence in your listing. Profiles that post weekly get indexed more frequently.
2. Posts increase click-through rate from search
A post with an offer, event, or update shows up in your knowledge panel. It takes up space. More space means more visual attention. I've seen click-through rates increase 15-20% on profiles that post consistently. More clicks mean more engagement signals, which feed into prominence.
3. Engagement from posts feeds prominence signals
When someone clicks your post, visits your website, or calls from a post — Google records that as an engagement signal. Not a ranking signal directly, but part of the prominence calculation. Prominence is a ranking factor. Posts are an indirect way to build prominence.
Types of posts that perform best
Offers and promotions get the most clicks. Events get the most views. Updates about your business (new hours, new services, holiday schedules) get the most engagement from existing customers. Mix all three types. Don't post only sales offers.
Frequency and image requirements
Post at least twice per week. More is better up to once per day. Each post needs an image — minimum 720 x 720 pixels. Posts without images get 70% fewer clicks. Do not reuse the same image. Google's freshness algorithm detects repeated content.
Posts won't take you from position 5 to position 1. But they will take you from position 5 to position 4, and from position 2 to position 1 in a tight race. They are a tiebreaker. In competitive markets, tiebreakers matter.
