What a Real SEO Audit Looks Like — and What to Do With It
Most SEO audits are fluff. Here's what a real one contains, how to read it, and what to fix first — in order of actual impact on your bottom line.
Technical SEO
Overview

You requested an SEO audit. An agency sent you a 47-page PDF. Page 3 has a pie chart. Page 12 recommends 'improving your content strategy.' Page 31 lists 200 keywords you should target. You close the PDF and nothing changes. This is not your fault. Most seo audits are designed to sound impressive and sell services, not to help you take action.
This post shows you what a real, actionable SEO audit contains — and what to do with the findings. If you have an audit sitting in your inbox, open it and follow along. If you do not have one, you will know exactly what to ask for.
What a real audit must cover
A meaningful audit covers four layers. If any layer is missing, the audit is incomplete.
Layer 1: Google Business Profile
Your GBP is the single highest-ROI asset for a local business. A real audit checks: Is your primary category correct? Google uses your primary category to decide which search queries to show you for. A dentist listed under 'General Dentistry' instead of 'Cosmetic Dentist' misses patients searching for smile makeovers. The audit should also check your secondary categories, services, products, Q&A, posts, images, and reviews-on-google" class="text-secondary underline hover:no-underline font-medium">review response patterns. If the audit does not open your actual GBP dashboard, it skipped the most important step.
Layer 2: Technical health
schema markup is not optional. If your site lacks LocalBusiness schema, you are invisible to Google's structured data parser. The audit checks: Schema validity (does it pass Google's rich result test?), page speed (both mobile and desktop with real CrUX data), Core Web Vitals (LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1), and crawl errors in Search Console. If the audit uses only Lighthouse scores without Search Console data, it is missing half the picture.
Layer 3: Competitor intelligence
Knowing your own site is not enough. You need to know what your competitors are doing. A real audit identifies your top 3-5 local competitors, their ranking keywords, their estimated organic traffic, and their backlink profile. If the audit does not name specific competitors and specific keywords they rank for, it is guessing.
Layer 4: Content and intent gaps
Ranking requires matching search intent. A real audit identifies which pages on your site match search intent and which pages miss. It also finds keyword opportunities your competitors cover that you do not. This is where the content strategy comes from — not a random list of high-volume keywords.
How to read the audit results
Most audits overwhelm you with findings. Here is how to prioritize: Fix GBP issues first (highest ROI, often same-day fixes). Fix technical issues that block indexing second (no point optimizing content Google cannot find). Address content and intent gaps third (this takes time but compounds). Optimize for competitive keywords last (this is a long game).
If an audit lists 50 problems with no priority order, ask for a ranked list. Any competent provider can rank issues by effort vs. impact.
What to fix in the first week
First, correct your GBP primary category if it is wrong. Second, fix broken schema markup using Google's Rich Results Test. Third, set up Search Console and submit your sitemap if you have not done so. Fourth, check for critical crawl errors (404s, 5xx, blocked resources). These four things take one hour and solve 60% of the problems that keep businesses invisible.
What to ignore
Ignore keyword lists that exceed 20 terms — you do not need 200 keywords. Ignore backlink analysis until your on-page SEO is solid — links to a bad page do not help. Ignore domain authority scores — they are a vanity metric created by tool vendors. Ignore any recommendation that starts with 'we recommend you invest in' without first explaining what the data says.
A good audit is a diagnosis, not a prescription pad. The data drives the recommendation. Not the other way around.
